This film tells about Jamal Malik, a teenager from slums of Mumbai, who just a more step from the first prize of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" quiz show. An amount of 10 million rupees is already in his hand. The only question left is the last question that can give him 20 million rupees. However, if he fails to answer it, he will not get any money even 1 rupee.
Unfortunately, before Jamal can answers the last question, the show ends and will be continued tomorrow. Suddenly, the local police come to arrest him because they cannot believe if Jamal who is actually a poor guy can answer the quiz till 10 million rupees question easily although many educated people cannot go through that question on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" quiz. The police then interrogate him because they think that Jamal was cheating. To prove that he is not guilty at all, he started to tell story about his experience in the past.
The story tells how hard and tragic are his life on the slums where him and his brother grew up. He tells about his mother's death, greeting with Amitabh Bachan, moment when he were picked up by a rude man to beggars society, first time he met Latika, a girl that he love, in the beggars society, and every important moments that make him becoming like now. Then, tomorrow comes and the police set him free to continue the quiz. Based on his trust and experience from every moment in his life, he gets the correct answer for the final question. He wins the 20 million rupees prize and the whole city is really happy for his win and they all celebrate it. This story ends with happy ending when finally he can meet Latika again.
